Water polo help & how-to
Film your water polo game, tap to mark the best moments, and your highlight reel is mostly built by the final whistle.
Moments, clips and parts
- A moment is one thing you tagged. Tap TAG and you have a moment. Every count of what you tagged says moments: the games list, the blue needs-details bar, and a game's Delete.
- A clip is the short video cut around a moment, one per camera angle. Film with a second phone and one moment has two clips, so a game can list more clips than moments. A reel uses one clip per moment unless you tick another angle.
- A part is one run of filming, from Start or Resume until Pause or End. Pausing at quarters leaves the full game in several parts, and you can join them back into one video when you save it.
1 Set up once
- Open Settings and pick your player's cap ★. It's pinned first when you tag.
- Set the clip length (seconds kept before and after each tap).
- Optionally turn on auto-save to Photos.
2 Film & tag on your device
- Tap New game, type who you are Playing, pick the roster if you keep more than one, then Start. Leave the opponent blank if you are in a hurry: the game is then listed by its date and time, and you can rename it any time.
- Picked the wrong roster? Tap the roster button in the top bar during the game and choose again. Everything you have already tagged moves with it, the caps you tapped stay exactly as they are, and nothing you filmed is touched. You can also change it afterwards, from the saved game.
- A yellow camera code appears on the card. Read it out to anyone filming for you, because it's how their phone joins. It stays in the top bar all game, and you can tap it to show it big.
- Watch the pool. Tap the big TAG button the moment something good happens.
- Pick the play (goal, save, steal…) and the cap. For goals and saves you can add the situation: 6v6, 6v5, 5v6, or 5m. On a goal, tap the passer in the Assist row to credit both players.
- Hold End when the game's over, and a clip is cut around every moment automatically.
3 Add a second camera
- On the other phone, open SplashReel and tap Join as camera.
- Keep Wi-Fi ON (no network needed) and allow the Local Network prompt.
- Type the 4-digit camera code shown on the tagging device, then tap your game in the list. Each one is named, so you can't join the wrong game.
- Wait for “Synced”, then Record and Stop on your own.
- A clip for each tagged moment is sent to the iPad automatically as a second angle.
4 Film now, tag later
- You never have to tag live. Already filmed the game on your phone, or someone else did? In the Library, tap Import video, then From Photos or From Files.
- Name the game and pick the roster, then tap Import. Those player names are saved with that game, so its clips and reels keep them.
- A bar shows how far along it is. Nothing is re-encoded, so no quality is lost. An unusual format has to be converted, which takes longer.
- The video opens ready to tag. Scrub to the moment, tap TAG, and pick the play and the cap exactly as you would at the pool.
- Filmed with SplashReel but too busy to tag? Open the game and tap Review & tag to add the moments you missed.
- Tap Done when you've finished, so your clips get cut.
5 Build a highlight reel
- From a game, tap Build reel.
- Choose which plays and which players to include, and whether to add title cards.
- Want just one player from just this game? Tap Export, then Player reel (this game).
- Save it to Photos or share it.
- Saving the full game instead? If you paused during the game, SplashReel asks whether you want one joined video or the separate parts.
6 One player's whole season
- Every game you tag adds to each player's season. In the Library, tap Players.
- Tap a player and SplashReel gathers their highlights from every game they played, oldest first. A cap change partway through the season doesn't matter, because they're found by player and not by number.
- Pick which clips make the cut, drag to lead with the best play, then build. This is the one to send to a coach.
- Each row says what it found, like “12 clips · from 5 of 8 games”, so you can see when a reel is shorter than the season.
- You can reach the same screen from a game's Export menu, under Season reel.
- A very long season reel is built without the title labels, and SplashReel tells you when that happens. Pick a shorter date range if you want to keep them.
7 Find your videos
- iPad: every game is under Games in the Library, and in the Files app under
On My iPad → SplashReel. - A game's row says what is in it: the team, the day, how many moments you tagged, how long you filmed and how much space it takes. If something is missing, like clips that never got made or footage you have not tagged yet, the row says so.
- Phone (camera mode): what you filmed is under Camera footage in the Library, and in Files. If you stopped and started, it is listed as several parts.
- Need the space back? Swipe a game left, or touch and hold it, then tap Delete. SplashReel asks first and tells you how many moments and how much video will go.
- Nothing is backed up anywhere, and a deleted game can't be brought back. Save anything you want to keep to Photos before you delete it.
Your plan
- Your first two games are free, reels included. After that, the Season Pass or Team Season Pass keeps your reels clean. Both are in Settings > Access.
- New device, or reinstalled? Tap Restore purchases in Settings > Access, signed in with the same Apple ID you bought with.
- Cancel or change a pass in your iPhone or iPad Settings: tap your name, then Subscriptions. Refunds go through Apple.
- Beta testers keep free access on the device they tested on. If you switch devices, add your email in Settings > Access and we restore it.
Tips
- Tap the screen to focus past sun glare on the water.
- Tagging keeps working even while the iPad recording is paused, as long as a phone is filming.
- Set a favorite cap so your player is always the first one-tap pick.
- Missed some plays? Open the game afterwards and tap Review & tag. Scrub back through the footage and add them. What you already tagged stays as it is.
- Fix a player's name whenever you like. Their season reel follows the name change, so nothing gets split in two.
If something's not working
- “That code didn't work”? Check the code on the tagging device. It's a new one for every game. Both devices also need the same version of SplashReel, so update them if it still won't join.
- Cameras won't connect? Turn Wi-Fi on (both devices) and allow Local Network in iOS Settings.
- Clips not arriving on the iPad? Keep the iPad on the review screen until the phone shows “all delivered.”
- Low-storage warning? Free up space, because a full game can be several GB. Save the games you want to keep to Photos, then delete them from the Games list.
- A video won't import? Try From Files instead of From Photos. A video that still lives in iCloud has to come down first, so give it a minute. SplashReel also makes its own copy of the video, so you need about as much free space as the video is big.
- A player's row says some older games can't be matched? Those games were tagged before SplashReel kept track of players, so they can only be found by name. Open the game, tap Roster, and pick the team again to link it properly.
